TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug

An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and assertions of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting products of uncertain source.

Several professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Removal

According to the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Digital Trading Operations

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.

After moments of joining one group, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of purchases take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these communities, posts display dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a injector should last, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Security Measures

A representative for the messaging service said it actively monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is sound, these online products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may expose users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
