The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
